'Pirates' Takes the Booty This Weekend!

'Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End' breaks box office record reported by Disney News

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" pulled in more than $140 million this Memorial Day weekend, breaking the box office record for the four-day holiday period but failed to beat the $151 million three-day opening weekend record that "Spider-Man 3" set earlier this month.

According to MTV News the top five highest-grossing opening weekends of all time:

#1 "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million)
#2 "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ($135.6 million)
#3 "Shrek the Third" ($121.6 million)
#4 "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" ($115 million)
#5 "Spider-Man" ($114.8 million)

Pirates Raise Booty for Child Program

The 8th Annual UCLA Run/Walk was held on Sunday, May 20 in Bruin Plaza, the heart of the UCLA campus. The Run/Walk had a pirates theme and was titled “Yo-Ho Yo-Ho, a Run/Walk Life for Me.”

Many of the runners and walkers dressed in costume in spirit of the pirate theme, with eye patches and bandannas, from the waist up. There was even a special appearance from Captain Jack Sparrow – well more along the lines of a student with an excellent costume!

The proceeds from the 5-kilometer race directly benefited the Child Life/Child Development Program at the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. The money raised helps the program to offer play therapy, expert consultations and genuine support for the patients and their families. The Child Life/Child Development Program was established in 1968 and addresses the unique needs of pediatric patients, especially the critically and chronically ill.

"Shrek The Third" Sets New Record

Hitting the box offices on Friday, "Shrek the Third" took in $122 million in its first weekend. This broke the franchise's own record for best debut ever for an animated film, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Shrek 2" in 2004 was the previous record-holder for animated openings with $108 million.



Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount, "Shrek the Third" was the third-biggest debut ever, coming in behind the $151.1 million haul of this month's "Spider-Man 3" and the $135.6 million gross of last summer's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."
