New Friday the 13th Movie

It seems that the filmmakers behind the upcoming rehash of the Friday the 13th series have found just what they were looking for in youngster Caleb Guss.

According to WorstPreviews, Guss has been cast in the role of iconic mass murderer Jason Voorhees, in the film’s flashbacks of Voorhees as a child. As we all know, the legendary masked killer was himself first killed in an accident at the summer camp Crystal Lake, and then reincarnated as the six-and-a-half-foot dude that we’ve all come to know and love.

In other news, producer Brad Fuller revealed the movie will carry an R rating (previous reports indicated that it would be PG-13). The film is set for release on February 13, 2009.

New DVD release: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (3-Disc Series) is now available on DVD. Here's the summary from Amazon:

It's promised as the final word on the subject, and it certainly seems definitive. Steven Spielberg's wonderful Close Encounters of the Third Kind is here collected in three different cuts, each with its own specific history.

There's the original theatrical release, never before issued to home video, which Spielberg said was rushed and not completed to his satisfaction. There's the 1980 Special Edition, which allowed Spielberg a re-edit, some new effects and scenes, and a controversial new ending that went inside the alien craft. Spielberg later said that ending was dictated by Columbia Pictures as a marketing ploy, and that he regretted showing the interior of the spacecraft. Amends were made with the 1998 Director's Cut, yet another re-edit that restored elements from the first version and eliminated the shots inside the Mother Ship. (For all the fuss, there are still fans who prefer the original version.)

A thorough, previously-available 100-minute documentary on the film is included in the package, as well as a 5-minute featurette from 1977. New this time is a 20-minute interview with Spielberg, looking back from the perspective of 30 years. A 30th anniversary collector's booklet offers some pretty pictures but a rather desultory collection of mini-biographies and quotes (some credited to the "International Movie Database," by which they presumably mean the "Internet Movie Database"). Most helpful is a glossy fold-out timeline charting the differences between the three films, a useful tool for sticklers. --Robert Horton

Clinton vs. Giuliani, Halloween Matchup

In a fun article on Halloween costumes, Americans were polled on the leading presidential candidates:

The Associated Press and Ipsos asked Americans to pick which candidates would make the scariest Halloween costumes. Naturally, frontrunners Senator Hillary Clinton and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani won in their respective political parties (there were separate polls for the two parties). Clinton led Democrats with 37% while Giuliani had 14%, and no other candidates broke 6%, giving them resounding wins. And we found this interesting: "While a predictable two-thirds of Republicans picked [Clinton], she also was the choice of 18 percent of Democrats. Among members of her own party, that made her second only to Giuliani as the scariest costume."

Take the poll yourself here.

Halloween Safety Tips

BEFORE HALLOWEEN:

  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

  • Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within Halloween attire or on a bracelet.

  • Because a mask can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic and hypoallergenic makeup or a decorative hat as a safe alternative.

  • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, purchase only those with a label indicating they are flame resistant.

  • Think twice before using simulated knives, guns or swords. If such props must be used, be certain they do not appear authentic and are soft and flexible to prevent injury.

  • Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.

  • Plan ahead to use only battery powered lanterns or chemical lightsticks in place of candles in decorations and costumes.

  • Teach children their home phone number and to how call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost. Remind them that 9-1-1 can be dialed free from any phone.

  • Review with your children the principle of "Stop-Drop-Roll", should their clothes catch on fire.

  • Take extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porch and walkway. Check around your property for flower pots, low tree limbs, support wires or garden hoses that may prove hazardous to young children rushing from house to house.

  • Learn or review CPR skills to aid someone who is choking or having a heart attack.

WHEN TRICK-OR-TREATING:

  • A Parent or responsible Adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.

Remind Trick-or-Treaters:

  • By using a flashlight, they can see and be seen by others.

  • Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.

  • Only trick-or-treat in well known neighborhoods at homes that have a porch light on.

  • Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.

  • If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.

  • Never cut across yards or use alleys.

  • Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat.

  • Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.

  • Always walk. Never run across a street.

  • Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom).

  • Remove any mask or item that will limit eyesight before crossing a street, driveway or alley.

  • Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean others will.

  • Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered.

  • No treats are to be eaten until they are thoroughly checked by an Adult at home.

  • Law Enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

AFTER TRICK-OR-TREATING:

  • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible Adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.

  • Try to apportion treats for the days following Halloween.

  • Although sharing is encouraged, make sure items that can cause choking (such as hard candies), are given only to those of an appropriate age.

We've Still Got the (Saturday Night) Fever After 30 Years

The 30th Anniversary Edition of Saturday Night Fever was just released and according to one review, we’ve still got the Fever after all these years!

Released in a 30th Anniversary Edition, the film still holds up as not just THE 1970s film as far as fashion and music but a rough, tragic coming of age story that any generation can relate to and perhaps be inspired by. In the role that made him a worldwide icon, John Travolta plays Tony Manero. The only thing that keeps the 19- year old Brooklyn kid and his friends alive and hopeful is Saturday night. On Saturday nights, they get dressed up and blow all their money at the disco.

Much of Fever’s aura comes from the Bee Gee’s music, which still is immensely enjoyable and how Travolta moves with it. The Fever soundtrack remains the top selling soundtrack of all time and is a staple at any club or house party.

The film has been called the first “dance” film that paved the way for other Travolta films like Urban Cowboy (1980), the ill-fated sequel to Fever; Staying Alive (1983) and the more successful iconic dance films of the 80s like Flashdance (1983), Footloose (1984), and Dirty Dancing (1987).

The new extras include the 52 minute retrospective documentary about the Fever phenomenon including the music, disco craze, fashion and how the film still holds up after 30 years. It includes interviews with ALL the cast and crewmembers EXCEPT for Travolta. His absence is never explained.

Fever was a huge turning point for American fashion as well as music. The film marked the shift from shaggy hairdos to perfectly coiffed, hairsprayed dos, gold neck chains, polyester shirts, platform shoes, and of course the three-piece white leisure suit that Travolta immortalized in the dance contest finale.

It’s not every film that can still pack a punch after 30 years but Saturday Night Fever is still as potent and as alive as it was back in 1977.Celebrate the Disco Era and the 30th anniversary release of Saturday Night Fever this Halloween! Blow out your hair and pick up a Night Fever Costume from Anniescostumes.com and hit the pavement. Can you just hear the Bee Gees singing Stayin’ Alive as you strut your stuff?

Red Sox get early start on Halloween

According to an article on Halloween costumes, even the Boston Red Socks got an early start on the fun at a game on September 16.

The Boston Red Sox didn't need an interpreter for this: With one quick wardrobe change, Daisuke Matsuzaka went from star pitcher to Teletubby.

"I didn't think there was anything that could make me laugh last night. There was," manager Terry Francona said yesterday.

Many teams use a late-season trip as a chance to have some fun with the rookies, dressing them in outlandish costumes that must be worn on the flight to the next city. Dice-K had to don the outfit after Sunday's 4-3 loss to New York at Fenway Park.

In addition to Matsuzaka, Boston's veterans dressed reliever Hideki Okajami and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury as female pirates, pitcher Clay Buchholz as Minnie Mouse and outfielder Brandon Moss as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

Francona said watching Matsuzaka clear customs at Pearson International Airport in Toronto was "hilarious."

"Somebody wrote a cheque for $102-million, and he's going through dressed as a rodent," Francona said.

Fans of comics, anime and science fiction gather for Supercon in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

According to a Miami Herald article on Florida Supcon, “Villains, heroes and other staples of the animated universe were out in force Sunday, the final day of the third annual Florida Supercon convention at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North.” Almost 3,000 were expected to attend the three-day event.

Sandra Botero of St. Petersburg, dressed as Wonder Woman, and George West, 640 AM Mantalk morning entertainment reporter, horse around at Florida Supercon on Sunday. A member of the League of Villains, Botero was contemplating a wardrobe change into one of her naughtier comic book personae, Catwoman.

Vendors sold classic comic books, ornate swords, costume contact lenses and more. Britani Farley, 20, and her boyfriend Shayank Lopez, 19, of Palm City, dressed as Zelda and Link from the video game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. ''I love dressing up,'' said Farley. “It's like being a celebrity for a day.'' Fellow League of Villains member Ryan Kennemore, 29, of Cumming, Ga., was dressed as Robin in a yellow cape and black mask. Kennemore said she was in greater demand on Saturday, however, when she showed up dressed as Harley Quinn, the Joker's girlfriend.

''Anybody can be a hero,'' Kennemore said. "It takes work to be a villain.''
You can dress like either one you choose, with costumes and accessories from Annies Costumes.
